After the Presentation by Dr. Mehret Debebe on Redeeming Identity, the conference participants at their respective round tables were requested to respond to four questions on these topics:
African-ness as Identity Or Identity as African
Individual or Communal Identity
Christian Africans or African Christians?
African-in-Christ or Christ in Africa?
The following concluding statements were captured from participants:
Identity should be tied to the Source who is God/Christ
It is important to know one’s individual identify first which will in turn lead to a more healthy communal identity. Individual Identity must be rooted in Christ in order for the individual to grow into the community
Our identity comes from what God, our source says we are (My God my source says who I am). We are Christians who happen to be Africans.
The African in Christ, not Christ in Africa, because God wants us to become like Him and not Him to become like us. Africans must take on Christ’s Identity since He is the Source.
